Is it safe to travel to Huatulco Mexico right now? ›

There are no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees to other parts of Oaxaca state, which include tourist areas in: Oaxaca City, Monte Alban, Puerto Escondido, and Huatulco. Exercise increased caution due to crime and kidnapping. Criminal activity and violence may occur throughout the state.

There is also very good snorkeling in both areas, and beautiful beaches. The main difference between those two areas are -there is better weather in Huatulco-hotter/more reliably sunny in winter, no rain, not as windy- and Huatulco is less built up and commercialized, and quieter in general.

March & April during Spring Break is another great time to visit, although the beaches will be a bit busier as a result. It's pretty rainy and humid June to September. Known for it's nice bays and miles of beautiful beaches, Huatulco is perfect for vacationers and retirees interested in a mix of culture and relaxation.

You basically get 2 destinations in one. For beaches and the people in general, I prefer Huatulco. Ixtapa/ Zihua is a bigger area definitely more touristy and a lot more nightlife. If you do decide on Ixtapa, please do yourselves a favor and spend a little time in Zihua as well.
