1. What is Form 1098-T?

Form 1098-T is an IRS form that is distributed in late January to students who had qualified education expenses during the previous calendar year. The form, in conjunction with personal financial records, can be used by students and their families to compute a education tax credits or deductions on their personal income tax returns.

Receipt of the 1098-T does not automatically make a student eligible for an education-related tax credit or deduction. Please consult a tax adviser or read about education-related tax credits and deductions on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.

2. Does every student receive a 1098-T?

No. But most do.

Willamette University prepares a 1098-T for any qualified student who made payments towards qualified education expenses during the calendar year.

Please note: Per IRS regulations, Willamette University is not required to provide the 1098-T form to students in the following instances:

1. Students who were only enrolled in courses for which no academic credit is offered.
2. Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, unless the student submits a written request.
3. Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships.
4. Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are covered by a formal billing arrangement between an institution and the student's employer, or a government entity.

3. Is my 1098-T available online?

Yes. Every 1098-T is made available onlinethrough TouchNet Bill+Payment by January 31st.

If you are no longer a student at Willamette University and you no longer have access to Bill+Payment,you can find your 1098-T formsatHeartland ECSI. When logging in, please remember that our school code is Q5 and your account number is your Willamette student ID number. If you forgot your password, you can call ECSI customer support at 1-866-428-1098.

4. Can authorized users access the 1098-T in Bill+Payment?

Yes.

Those who were granted "authorized user" access in TouchNet's Bill+Payment prior to December 31, 2017 may have trouble viewing their student's 1098-T online.

Prior to that date, theAuthorized User Agreement may not have contained language allowing users access to their student's 1098-T. However, this is easily fixed. Please have your student take the following steps:

1. Log in to TouchNet Bill+Payment
2. Under My Profile Setup, click Authorized Users
3. To the right of the name of the user, click Action and then Edit
4. A pop-up window will open. The second item is the option for the 1098-T
5. Click the Yes button to grant access, then click Update User

5. Can former students download a 1098-T, even if access to Bill+Payment is closed?

Former students who no longer have access to Bill+Payment may log into ECSI's website directly to download their 1098-T. Here are the steps:

• Visit ECSI's website
• Enter our school code, which is Q5
• Enter your student ID number or your social security number
• Missing your password? Call ECSI customer care at 1-866-428-1098.

6. Will I receive a copy of the 1098-T in the mail?

No. All forms are made available online via Bill+Payment.

7. What are qualified education expenses?

Qualified education expenses are tuition and certain related expenses required for enrollment or attendance at the University. The following are qualified education expenses at Willamette University: tuition charges, mandatory student fees, and certain fees required for courses. Other charges, including housing and meal plans, are not considered qualified education expenses for purposes of the 1098-T.

8. What constitutes the payments reported in Box 1?

Per IRS regulations, amounts reported as payments in Box 1 include the following: personal payments, loan amounts (amounts that will need to be paid back to a lender, such as Stafford loans and Plus loans), and scholarships/grants received during the calendar year for qualified education expenses less any refunds issued due to overpayments on the account.

Total payments reported in Box 1 cannot exceed the amount of applicable qualified education expenses (see prior question).

9. Do you prepare Canadian tax form TL11A?

We can prepare the Canadian tax form TL11A upon request for students who are citizens of Canada. Like the 1098-T, these forms report on calendar year activity. We prepare the TL11A forms in February.
